Frequently asked questions:

What is orofacial myofunctional therapy?

Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is muscular therapy for the head and neck region. We focus on reeducation of the muscles of the head and neck to regain normal function and treat symptoms. Proper tongue and lip positioning, along with correct breathing techniques, support the body in overall health and is imperative for a fully functioning airway.

Why did my health care provider recommend OMT?

If you were recommended OMT through Mount Royal Dental (Duluth, MN), our dental providers are trained to screen for airway dysfunction. Our team is monitoring for wear on the teeth, signs of clenching and grinding, TMD, high rate of cavities, gag reflex, malocclusion, tongue abnormalities, palatal arch shape, and more. We also want to know about your sleep to prevent and treat early signs of sleep apnea and sleep disturbances.

Why is mouth breathing “bad”?

We, as humans, are designed to primarily breathe through our noses. The nose is designed to filter the air and convert nitric oxide within our system. When a person is mouth breathing, they not only are getting improper oxygen flow and unfiltered air, their airway is also not supported.

Do you believe that you may need a frenectomy?
